May Heralds Start of Summer
Jennette’s Pier

The pier’s busy season begins this month, as Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer along the Outer Banks. With the ocean temperature climbing steadily, fishing continues to improve. Anglers can expect catches of bluefish, croaker, flounder, drum, sea mullet and trout. To see what’s going on, check our Facebook page or Daily Fishing Report.

May also marks the beginning of wedding receptions in Oceanview Hall and special events on the beaches surrounding Jennette’s Pier. With a dozen receptions and two beach events already on the calendar, the pier promises to be a hub of activity in Nags Head.

Some of the best young wave riders from along the East Coast compete in the Surfing America Prime contest at Jennette’s the first weekend in May. At the end of the month, sports fans can sit back and enjoy watching Extreme Volleyball Professionals on Saturday, May 31.

The pier’s education department also has a busy month ahead. Ten school groups are scheduled to visit, totaling hundreds of children fishing on the pier or creating solar-powered cars and boats, which they end up racing head to head.
