The North Carolina Aquariums offer many exciting opportunities for those interested in volunteer opportunities, internships, employment and current vacancies.

 

 
 

Dive Team

 

Year-Round Adult Volunteer Program

 

Year-Round Student Volunteer Program

 

Volunteers are always welcome at the Aquariums, where they are usually asked to make a minimum commitment of two to four hours a week. Orientation sessions and training are provided, and every effort is made to match up diverse skills with Aquarium needs throughout the year.

The North Carolina Aquariums offer a limited number of internships to students majoring in biology, ecology, education, design, and related fields. Internships available include:

  • North Carolina State Government/Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office (YAIO) Internships: Three internships, in animal husbandry, education, and exhibit design, are available at each Aquarium for in-state students and North Carolina residents each summer.   • Paid Summer Internships:
    Paid summer internships are offered on a limited basis. For more information on these and other opportunities contact the Aquarium.

The North Carolina Aquariums are a state-run facility and full time employment opportunities are handled through the North Carolina Office of State Personnel. For a complete listing of positions available, visit the OSP website or contact the Office of State Personnel at 919-733-3182. All applications for North Carolina Aquarium positions should include a State Application PD-107 form and should be received no later than 4:30 p.m. on the closing date. Current Vacancies at Roanoke Island:

 

Position: T-1 Divemaster/Aquarist

The North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island is seeking applications for a Divemaster/Aquarist. Position is a temporary position with no benefits starting at $13.35 per hour/$23,496.00 per year based on 11 months of full-time employment with additional pay for holiday overtime. Weekend and holiday work will be required. Position reports directly to Dive Safety Officer for approximately 16 hours and Husbandry Curator for remaining 24 hours per week respectively. Work includes exhibit/offshore diving up to 8 dives per week, supervising volunteer dive teams, filling dive cylinders, collecting animals, assist with maintaining animal life support systems, meeting animal nutritional/medical needs, monitoring water quality, and conducting live animal education programs. Minimum requirements include Instructor and/or Divemaster designation with current liability insurance (proof required prior to employment) with nationally recognized SCUBA certification agency (NAUI, PADI, SSI, IANTD, YMCA etc. Prefer additional experience working with captive animals, ability to work under adverse conditions, ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work as a team member under adverse conditions, and willingness to learn. Candidate must have a valid state driver’s license, social security number, and be a United States Citizen and/or have a valid work visa (proof of each required prior to employment).
